What We Want To Achieve

This is a campaign to highlight the need for greater accountability within the veterinary profession and to make the complaints procedure against vets easier to navigate.

This is NOT a hate campaign against the veterinary profession. We aim to achieve the following;

  • To make the veterinary profession more accountable for its actions;

  • To lobby for a complaints and disciplinary procedure that affords the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons powers to discipline members in cases of proven negligence.

  • To modernise the existing complaints procedures to make it easier for animal owners to lodge complaints against individual veterinary personnel who they believe have acted negligently or are guilty of serious professional misconduct;

  • To broaden the remit of the Royal College of Veterinary surgeons disciplinary panel to enable consideration of a wider range of complaints;

  • To implement a rigorous programme of external audit of veterinary notes to ensure compliance with current good practice;

  • To encourage veterinary practices to advertise their charging structure for both professional services and medicines in a transparent manner in order that pet owners are aware of the likely costs before agreeing to a course of treatment;

  • To introduce a warning/restriction mechanism for veterinary surgeons found guilty of negligence, as an alternative to 'striking off';

  • To introduce mandatory adoption of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) for all veterinary practices operating in the UK.
